What is Yoga Nidra anyway?

We don’t always get the rest we need at night

Kids keep us up,

We stay up to catch up,

We stay up working,

We stay up watching,

Thoughts and worries keep our mind awake

But sleep isn’t the only time we can rest

Let’s normalise resting when we’re awake and make space for our busy bodies to be still during the day. When you’re tired and feeling low on energy Yoga Nidra may just do the trick.

Yoga Nidra, a type of guided relaxation, is a good way to help you receive the rest you need.

Yoga Nidra is also known as ‘Yogic Sleep’ because it promotes deep rest and rejuvenation like sleep does and can be used to compensate for lost sleep as it takes you into a sleep like state while still maintaining awareness.

Best of all anyone can experience its benefits as it is suitable for all ages and abilities, and requires no movement or previous experience. It’s also the perfect prenatal and postnatal relaxation to reduce stress and replenish energy levels.

Yoga Nidra can reduce stress and anxiety by triggering the body’s relaxation response and calming the nervous system away from the fight or flight response that we spend a lot of our time in.

It helps the mind and body relax more which can in turn improve sleep and help to release physical tension and leads to overall emotional and physical wellbeing.

What does it involve?

All you have to do is sit or lie comfortably and listen to the guided relaxation. You may feel yourself drifting in and out, which is completely normal. There is no right or wrong way to practise Yoga Nidra. The guided relaxation will take you through a systematic body scan, will guide your attention to sounds around you, sensations in your body, breath awareness and guided imagery.

When we’re constantly on the go, spending time in stillness and relaxation can be just the thing we need to calm our nerves system and replenish our energy levels.

Join monthly Yoga Nidra sessions in Coventry and give yourself the rest you need.

All you need to do is arrive. The mats, blankets, bolsters and lavender eye pillows will be laid out for you. This is your invitation to rest. Check out the schedule here.

See you on the mat,

Rossana
