Pregnancy Yoga and Wellbeing
You can start to build the foundations for your maternal wellbeing long before your baby is born.
When you’re busy preparing for the arrival of your newborn, planning the birth, and purchasing everything they need are you also spending some time thinking about what supports you, what helps you feel cared for, what brings you feelings of calm and relaxation in times of overwhelm?
Pregnancy is a great time to explore wellbeing tools and techniques that can support you now and throughout motherhood. The practises you learn during pregnancy are practises you can come back to postnatally too. A simple breathing technique, a few nurturing movements, a mindful pause, learning to slow down, finding ways to gather energy. All of these help you take care of yourself and give you a greater capacity to respond to the needs of those who depend on you. These practises can form your toolkit - the familiar things you draw on when you’re sleep deprived, running on empty, overstimulated and feel like you do nothing for yourself anymore.
We hear it all the time - we can’t run on empty and we cannot give from an empty cup. When we support and take care of ourselves we have more to give to others.
When we, as mothers and mothers-to-be, plan for our wellbeing in this way, yoga in pregnancy becomes so much more than moving in a way that is safe for your changing and growing body. It teaches us to slow down, to listen to our body, to give ourselves time for rest and to honour our needs. And when baby comes it may no longer look like 60 minutes on a mat and that’s okay. Because when all you have is a few minutes you’ll already know your go-to’s to reset and start again.
